The legend, no. You could use the text function, but would manually have to create and position each label.

Call legend() with 'Location', 'southoutside'

Use one of the ‘...outside’ 'Location' options:

M = magic(10);  
figure(1)
contour(M)
legend('Data','Location','northeastoutside')
