MATLAB: No speed improvement using ‘parfor’

parforspeed

i'm using parfor in one of my loops to speed up the process but Matlab only uses 1 cpu, thus it has the same operating speed as without parfor (and i have 4 cpus). How come ?

i'm on 2013a

i think it's because i don't have the parallel computing toolbox (yet) right? i thought parfor was working because i hadn't any error messages when using it...

And because you don't have the Parallel Computing Toolbox, parfor will run serially anyway. There is more overhead with parfor so I would recommend against using it if you don't have Parallel Computing Toolbox.

It might be faster to code the transform yourself as a matrix multiplication rather than calling makehgtform. The array is fairly simple: http://www.siggraph.org/education/materials/HyperGraph/modeling/mod_tran/3drota.htm

           ( cos q  sin q  0  0)
  Rz (q) = (-sin q  cos q  0  0)
           ( 0        0    1  0)
           ( 0        0    0  1)

Only two trig calls needed.
