MATLAB: Need to line up two graphs on same plot

I am using

[AX,H1,H2] = plotyy(time,Y1,time,Y2);

The x-axis(time) are the same for both. The green and blue graphs in the image both end at the same point, but notice how the green graph starts earlier. I want to line both graphs up so that they have the same starting and ending points. For some of the other graphs I've made, it's done by default. I'm not sure what is different with this set of data…

Any help is appreciated. Thanks! 🙂

Using PLOTYY creates two overlapping X-Axes along with the desired set of Y-Axes.

Subsequently changing the x-tick labels using DATETICK or set(gca, ‘XTickLabel’, …) only changes the x-tick labels of one of these two x-axes resulting in the overlap.

In order to work around this issue, you can delete the tick labels from both sets of x-axes and then assign new x-tick labels. The following code illustrates this workaround:

x=[1:10]
y1=2*x;
y2=3*x;
plotyy(x, y1, x, y2)
[AX,H1,H2] = plotyy(x, y1, x, y2)  
set(AX, 'xTickLabel','') % delete the x-tick labels
datetick('x',2) % update the x-tick labels

In the above code, [AX,H1,H2] = plotyy(...) returns the handles of the two axes created in AX and the handles of the graphics objects from each plot in H1 and H2. AX(1) is the left axes and AX(2) is the right axes.

Alternatively, you can set the dateticks on both axes, as in the example below:

x = datenum(0:0.01:20); 
y1 = 200*exp(-0.05*x).*sin(x); 
y2 = 0.8*exp(-0.5*x).*sin(10*x); 
AX = plotyy(x,y1,x,y2,'plot'); 
datetick(AX(1),'x',20)

Another option is to link the properties of both axes as shown in the example below:

The function PLOTYY creates two sets of axes and uses the property YAxisLocation to put them on different sides on a figure. By default, Y tick marks are spaced such that the overlap exactly and it appears that there is only one set of tick marks on each of the Y axes.

However, when tick mark properties (such as their quantity, spacing or Y limits) are modified manually, without ensuring that the same number of tick marks is present on both axes, the above behavior is seen (i.e. two sets of tick marks on one of the axes).

The axis property 'Box' controls the presence of Tick marks on both sides on an axis. By default, PLOTYY sets the value of this property to 'off' for the right axes and to 'on' for the left axes (that is why the double tick marks appear on the right axes).Setting the value of the property 'box' to 'off' for both axes will remove the extra sets of tick marks from the other side as well.

However, this will also remove the top edge of the axes (the bounding box) and the image may look borderless when it is saved or printed. As a workaround, one of the two sets of X axes (which were created with PLOTYY) may be moved to the top of the figure, effectively replacing the bounding box along that edge. The two X axes may need to be linked via the command LINKAXES to make sure that the two plots are synchronized when zooming in.

The following code illustrates the issue and the workaround, step by step (note the commands PAUSE in this code):
