MATLAB: Is it possible to see the list of files in a folder while using UIGETDIR on a Windows machine

I would like to see the UIGETDIR for Windows behave more like the version for the Mac. That is, I would like to have an option where it can list files in the folder before I select a folder using UIGETDIR. Sometimes you do not know if you are in the correct folder unless you can see the filenames in it.

The ability to see the list of files in a folder while using UIGETDIR on Windows machines does not exist in MATLAB 7.9 (R2009b).

As a workaround, use UIGETFILE to select a file in the directory of interest, and use the second output argument to retrieve the path to the directory:

[file, path] = uigetfile

if you take a look at TestFiles(1).name you will see the ".", which is the current folder. Several possibilities: if you e.g. only have files with .jpg, you could write

TestFiles = dir(fullfile(FullPath, '*.jpg'));

or similar for other file formats. If you need all image files, be sure to not read "." and ".." by e.g.

if ~strcmp(TestFiles(i).name, '.') && ~strcmp(TestFiles(i).name, '..')
  S = imread(...);
end

The ability to have MKDIR and EXIST handle incorrect file separators in a consistent manner on a UNIX patform is not available in MATLAB 7.8 (R2009a).

To work around this issue, avoid defining strings which contain file separators to being with. That is, instead of defining the 'directoryName' variable like this:

    directoryName = './myDirectory\forTesting';

a better solution is to use to FULLFILE command and define it like this:

    directoryName = fullfile(pwd, 'myDirectory', 'forTesting');

Using the FULLFILE command will take care of using the correct file separators automatically thereby making your code work correctly across different platforms.
