There is no upgrade path for Student Version licenses, other than buying the whole package again (presuming you are still eligible.)
Student Version MATLAB cannot be updated; you would need to buy a new license.
The newest Student Version is R2013a.
I am finding mixed hints as to whether R2013a or R2013b is required to use SDR. Some of the entries in the File Exchange date from a year ago (before R2013a was officially released), but I see that version 1.0 of the SDR support package is for R2013b.
