MATLAB: How to use Surface pro 4 Camera in Matlab

Hi everyone,

I want to ask about how to implement my surface pro 4 camera into matlab for testing computer vision toolbox

I did download the MATLAB support package for USB webcams, however, I'm still not able to use my use my camera in MATLAB

In the Command Window, I did text webcam to check but here is the error:

Error using webcam (line 116)

Error. The format exposed by the webcam is not supported.

Surface Pro laptop’s inbuilt camera uses a color format which is currenlty not supported with the "webcam" command. Alternatively, if you do have Image Acquisition Toolbox installed, then you can install the “Image Acquisition Toolbox Support Package for OS Generic Video Interface” and then use the following command to create a camera object:

>> v = videoinput(‘winvideo’,1)

The Image Acquisition Toolbox supports connections to IEEE-1394 (FireWire) DCAM-compliant devices using the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) DCAM driver. If the toolbox does not recognize a DCAM camera connected to your computer, most likely the camera has not been configured to use the CMU DCAM driver.

The supported version of the driver is shipped with MATLAB and can be located in the following directory:

$MATLABROOT\toolbox\imaq\imaqextern\drivers\win32\dcam

(where $MATLABROOT is the MATLAB root directory on your machine, as returned by typing

matlabroot

at the MATLAB Command Prompt.)

Be sure to install the CMU DCAM demo application when you install the CMU DCAM driver. To verify your FireWire camera has been successfully configured to use the CMU DCAM driver, try accessing your camera from the CMU demo application. If the CMU demo application can access your DCAM camera, it has been successfully configured and can be used by the toolbox.

Note the CMU driver strictly adheres to the DCAM specification. The toolbox does not support vendor specific DCAM drivers which frequently offer extensions or modifications to the DCAM specification.

In addition to supporting various frame grabber manufacturers, the toolbox supports FireWire digital cameras that support the IIDC 1394-based Digital Camera Specification (DCAM), as well as generic Windows video hardware like USB cameras.

To test your FireWire camera for compatibility with the toolbox, download the CMU 1394 Digital Camera driver from the CMU Web site

2) Generic Windows video capture devices are required to be DirectX (DirectShow) compatible for them to work with the Image Acquisition Toolbox. In order for a device to be DirectX compatible, it must provide a WDM (Windows Driver Model) or VFW (Video For Windows) driver.

You can determine if your device is DirectX compatible by running Microsoft's NetMeeting application, or by running the Microsoft image capture application, AMCap.exe.

If you are able to successfully operate your device with NetMeeting or the above utility without encountering any errors, the video capture device is expected to work with the toolbox.
