MATLAB: How to suppress the scale factor of a matrix

In matlab, if the largest element of a matrix is larger than 10^3 or smaller than 10^-3 , MATLAB applies a common scale factor for the short and long formats. How do I suppress this scale factor so that the matrix is displayed with every element as short/long format?

Per the "Algorithms" notes in the doc, "If the largest element of a matrix is larger than 103 or smaller than 10-3, then MATLAB applies a common scale factor for the short and long format."

I hadn't really tested before, I thought it was a %g format but it doesn't actually follow those rules which count the number of significant digits to be shown. It's internal as above says purely only magnitude of exponent >3

Just scale linearly - at least that's one of an unlimited number of ways:

% Declare random sample data.
signal = 20*rand(1,10)-10
% Offset so that the min of the new signal is at zero.
newSignal = signal - min(signal);

newSignal = newSignal / sum(newSignal)
% Print out the sum, just to check.
