MATLAB: How to store a function file to a variable

function files fprintf

I use a function file to run some computations and it looks something like this

x_max(<input1,input2>=answer

after the function computes my command window displays

ans=<answer>

I would like to know how to store this answer a variable for which i could display using fprintf. For example, I would like to display something like

"the value of x_max is <answer>"

Something like this assuming your function name is x_max

my_variable = x_max(input1,input2);
fprintf('The value of x_max is %g\n',my_variable);

The output variable is whatever you want to call it. You have to call it ‘wavelengtha’ internally in order for the function to return that variable as output, but ‘wavelengtha’ is only local to your ‘test’ function.

You would call the function, for instance with variables ‘x_1’ and ‘y_1’ and you want to call your wavelength ‘lambda_1’, simply call your function with:

lambda_1 = test(x_1,y_1)

If your input is implicitly x^2 + 2 + x = 0 then your example output of x = x^2 + 2 is incorrect: instead x = -x^2 - 2
