MATLAB: How to identify small irregular objects in an image

Can matlab Image processing toolbox identify small objects with irregular shapes such as those in the image below? (the original image does not have those arrows).

I suppose, if you can come up with a description of them, like their color is different, or they're darker and in a certain size range, etc. It's a pretty variable scene so there are lots of things there that could potentially be irregularities, like a whitish patch or big blurry region or whatever. So you need to be specific.
