MATLAB: How to get rid of this error on MATLAB

My error:

My computer is connected to a National Instrument Device and I want it to be detected. After putting in the following code in the scripting section, I kept getting an error even though I deleted it!

Here is the code.. I am trying to make a function with inputs and outputs:

function [m,s] = stat(x)
   n = length(x);
   m = sum(x)/n;
   s = sqrt(sum((x-m).^2/n));
   values = [12.7, 45.4, 98.9, 26.6, 53.1];
   [ave,stdev] = stat(values)

If your "stat" function calls "stat" inside it, then it's recursive. And since you don't have any ending condition, it will just keeping going in deeper and deeper until you recurse deeper than it can handle.

Hi David,

It seems that you are using the X- Series device NI PXIe-6358 on the NI PXIe-1062Q PXI chassis. The command daq.getDevices returns you the device and not the chassis and thus you see PXI 6358 and not PXIe1062Q.

R2012a added a new functionality to set your devices reference clock to the PXI chassis backpane 10 MHz clock PXI_CLK10, so that all the modules in your chassis will share the same clock. However, in you case it seems to error out at that point. X-Series boards do support reference clock synchronization, so I not sure about the exact reason you are seeing this. However, you can disable this functionality using these commands:

daq.reset
daq.HardwareInfo.getInstance('DisableReferenceClockSynchronization',true);

You will need to use the command after every daq.reset. I would also recommend that you contact technical support regarding this issue so that they can get to the root of this problem.

It is not clear from your explanation where you are defining the function, but I can see two main possibilities which would generate that error (or a similar error):

Trying to define a function in the command window: this is not allowed in MATLAB, all functions must be saved in a file (except for anonymous functions).
Trying to define a function inside a script: only MATLAB versions from R2016B+ support functions defined in scripts. You need to read the documentation carefully for your version, not the online help (which is for the most recent version): for your MATLAB version it is not possible to define a function inside a script.

In practice if you want to define a function then do NOT have any code outside of any function declaration, e.g. this needs to be the entire file contents:

function [m,s] = stat(x)
n = length(x);
m = sum(x)/n;
s = sqrt(sum((x-m).^2/n));
end

You can add local functions to the same file, but NO CODE outside of those functions. Save the function as a file stat.m (you should use the same name as the function itself). Then it will work.
