You can pass a handle to waitbar() as the first parameter. It must be of an graphics object for which getappdata(TheHandle, 'TMWWaitbar_handles') returns a structure with five fields of the proper internal names. The internal work of doing the update is hidden in a p-coded file, so I cannot tell at the moment if you could create a false environment (such as a uipanel) or not.

If you have not created the false environment, then there is no option or code path in waitbar() that would allow you to use an existing non-waitbar instead of it creating a new figure.

delete(h.waitbar);

instead of

close(h.waitbar);

Basically what happens is that when you set the CreatCancelBtn property this also sets the CloseRequestFcn to the same thing. Thus calling CLOSE only sets the appdata to the figure.

The value of 'Children' properties are always object handles (usually in handle graphic numeric form), and are never strings.

Is 'axes_of_data' a variable name, or is it a field in your handles structure, or is it the Tag of the axes? (The last two could potentially be both true, especially if you are using GUIDE.)

If it is a Tag, then use

h = findobj(gcf, 'Tag', 'axes_of_data')
