MATLAB: How I generate a random number between 300 and 450

I would like to generate a number between 300 and 450.

I also would like which is the possible ways to generate numbers on Matlab? Is there a Poisson generator for random numbers?

And what does the initial seed mean?

You can create a "truncated" Poisson distribution that is based on the regular Poisson distribution, but with its range truncated to a given interval and its probability density function (PDF) adjusted so that the distribution remains a proper one (i.e., its integral over the truncation range equals 1).

For example, to generate numbers in the range [300, 450] from a truncated Poisson distribution, you could use

% Regular Poisson distribution
lambda = (300+450)/2; % To put the mean in the middle of the range
d = makedist('poisson', 'lambda', lambda)
% Truncated Poisson distribution
td = d.truncate(300, 450)
td.random(10,1) % Generate 10 random numbers in the range [300 450]

One easy way to generate a random score from a poisson mixture distribution is to randomly select the particular poisson first and then randomly select the number from that poisson, something like this:

% generate a random value of x from a poisson mixture distribution:
ru = rand;
if r1<0.2
    x = poissrnd(lambda1);  % prob = 0.2 that x comes from this distribution
elseif ru<0.5
    x = poissrnd(lambda2);  % prob = 0.3 that x comes from this distribution
else
    x = poissrnd(lambda3);  % prob = 0.5 that x comes from this distribution

There are various ways to vectorize this for lots of x's, but I'm not sure which would be fastest.

Did you just want the poisson mixture for generating random numbers, or did you want it for some other reason too?

There is only one parameter for the Poisson distribution, lambda, and that sets both the mean and the variance of the distribution. You can't independently set the mean and variance differently, which you are apparently trying to do. Why do you want/need to do that?
