MATLAB: How do i get columns of excel files into pop up menu

Hi team, I am facing problem in getting columns of excel file into popup menu. I used the following code.

 filename=uigetfile({'*.xls';'*.csv'});
 handles.filename=filename;
set(handles.editpath,'String',filename)
 guidata(hObject, handles)
 setpopupmenuString(handles.popupmenucycle,eventdata,handles)
 function setpopupmenuString(hObject,eventdata,handles)
 filename=handles.filename;
 [numbers,colNames]=xlsread(filename);
 set(hObject,'String',colNames);
 The popup menu is displaying values of 1st column alone with its header. Someone please help me in solving this problem.

It would be better if you used

set(hObject, 'String', colNames(1,:) );

Just after you have done the set() in your function, please add

class(colNames)
size(colNames)

and tell us what it displays. If it shows the class as being cell, please also show

colNames{1,1}

Run the line [numbers,colNames] = xlsread(fileName); from the Command Window (with the appropriate fileName filled in, obviously) and take a look at colNames. It is almost certainly going to be a whole cell array of text entries. This means that the actual column header strings you want are colNames{1,1} and colNames{1,2}. Because MATLAB is column-major, and allows linear indexing, I suspect that set(hObject,'string',colNames); is essentially getting colNames{1,1} and colNames{2,1} (ie going down the first column). But {2,1} is going to be blank.

So, short answer: replace

set(hObject,'string',colNames);

with

set(hObject,'string',colNames(1,1:2));

Varun - when you import the data from the Excel file, you are doing

handles.data1=xlsread(filename, selectedsheet)
data1=handles.data1
set(hObject, 'data1')

where the data1 field of the handles struct is being created and set to the data from the file. This is fine but what you need to do next is to save this new field to the structure (right now, you are just updating a local copy)

handles.data1=xlsread(filename, selectedsheet)
guidata(hObject, handles); % <---- the updated handles object is now saved

The other two lines (the second which may throw an error if the data1 field is not a property of hObject) can be removed. So remove

data1=handles.data1
set(hObject, 'data1')

Then in the popupmenu6_Callback, you would access data1 via

if isfield(handles, 'data1')
    item=handles.data1(item_selected, 29)
end

The line get(handles.popupmenu1, 'data1') which is throwing the error, can be removed.
