When trying to start MATLAB I get the following error:

error while loading shared libraries: libXpm.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

This error indicates that you are missing at least one of the libraries that MATLAB relies on to start. MATLAB does require X Server libraries installed on the machine in order to run MATLAB. If you are installing the network license manager only, you can use silent installation (see the related solution below).

If you are on a Debian based Linux disto, you can install this missing library and several other dependencies by running the following:

sudo apt-get install xorg

For Red-Hat based Linux distros, you can use the yum package tool.

yum list | grep -i xorg-x11-libs

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 2012a (R2012a). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:

This issue is caused by a missing or outdated libstdc++.so.6 as required by the keycheck application (R2011a) or the MLM vendor daemon (R2011b). Both the R2011a keycheck and R2011b MLM vendor daemon require libstdc++.so.6.0.10. Refer to your operating system documentation for information on how to update or install a missing library.

If the necessary version of the library is not available for your Linux distribution it can be copied and installed from the MATLAB installation files following the instructions below:

NOTE: $MATLAB refers to the MATLAB installation location (ex: /usr/local/MATLAB/R2011b)

NOTE: $ARCH refers to the machine architecture (ex: glnx86 for Linux 32-bit or glnxa64 for Linux 64-bit)

If MATLAB is installed in addition to the network license manager, skip directly to step 3.

1. Create a subdirectory within the MATLAB installation folder as shown below:

 [root@localhost ~] mkdir -p $MATLAB/sys/os/$ARCH

2. Copy the libstdc++.so.6.0.10 library from the MATLAB installation files (either an installation DVD or the extracted downloaded installer archive) into the newly created directory:

 [root@localhost ~] cp /media/MATLAB_R2011b/bin/$ARCH/libstdc++.so.6.0.10 $MATLAB/sys/os/$ARCH

3. Run 'ldconfig' to create symbolic links to the new library and update the dynamic linker cache (please note that this command must be run using an absolute path):

 [root@localhost ~] ldconfig $MATLAB/sys/os/$ARCH

4. After verifying this works, you will need to add $MATLAB/sys/os/$ARCH to the /etc/ld.so.conf file, or add the full ldconfig command to your boot script.

For Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5) the following can be added to your startup script which avoids needing ldconfig and affects only the lmgrd and MLM.

Add to the /etc/init.d/lmgrd startup script:

 export LD_PRELOAD=$MATLAB/sys/os/glnxa/libstdc++.so.6

MATLAB: Do I get a java error “libXt.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory” when installing PolySpace on a Linux workstation

This error is due to the PolySpace installer not finding xorg-x11-libs packages. PolySpace installer or Polyspace report generation require some libraries like libXt.so to continue installation or to generate reports.

To resolve this issue, we need to check if all the necessary packages are installed in the system (32-Bits X11 libraries). The following 32-Bits packages are required:

libX11.so,

libXau.so,

libXcursor.so,

libXdmcp.so,

libXext.so,

libXfixes.so,

libXi.so,

libXmu.so,

libXp.so,

libXpm.so,

libXrender.so,

libXt.so, and

libXtst.so.

The easiest method to see the installed packages would be to use graphical package managers. Different distributions use different package managers. For example, 'Ubuntu' uses 'Synaptic package manager' whereas 'Suse' uses 'SMART package manager'.

You can also use command-line commands to list out the installed packages.

1. In a Debian based Linux distribution, you can use the command

    'dpkg -l'

to list out the installed packages.

2. Similarly, in a Redhat distribution, you can use the command

    'rpm -qa'

to list out the installed packages

Install any missing packages and then launch the PolySpace installer again to install PolySpace or relaunch your verification asking for a report generation.
