I want to use the VIDEOREADER class to read videos encoded with the FFV1 codec. I am using MATLAB 7.14 (R2012a) on Windows 7 64-bit. Where can I get the FFV1 codec?

We do not provide a download link for the FFV1 codec. In MATLAB 7.14 (R2012a) on Windows 7 64-bit the VIDEOREADER class supports video formats and codecs supported by Microsoft DirectShow or Microsoft Media Foundation.

You could search for a 64-bit FFV1 codec that is compatible with Microsoft DirectShow or Microsoft Media Foundation. However, keep in mind MATLAB does not support or test 3rd party codecs. Therefore we cannot provide any guarantee that they will work properly within MATLAB.

A codec is the instructions for decoding (or encoding) video files from (or to) disk. Once a file is written to disk, it can be read by any codec that can be used by the application. MATLAB can read video files created by either 32-bit or 64-bit applications if the proper codec installed. For example, a 64-bit codec must be installed to read or write files in 64-bit MATLAB on 64-bit systems. avifile(filename, 'Compression', 'None')

- Quicktime Pro

VirtualDub has a command line interface so it is possible to drive it using SYSTEM.

The second workaround is to specify a codec for a compression that is installed. The ones that are included with Windows XP 64 are

          *     MRLE — Microsoft RLE codec (c:\winnt\system32\msrle32.dll)
          *     MSVC — Microsoft Video 1 codec (c:\winnt\system32\msvidc32.dll)

For example, to use the Intel YUV codec, use the four-CC code:

Other codecs can be found at http://fourcc.org.

Note there are restrictions with some codecs. For example, some codecs can only be used with grayscale images.
