Why do I get a "Deactivation Required" message after manually activating MATLAB?

This issue may occur if you activate the license in the License Center for a newer release than you are trying to install. When launching MATLAB for the first time, it tries to validate the license against the activation servers. During this process, the validation call fails to find an activation. As a result the error message is thrown.
To resolve this issue, reactivate MATLAB.
