I like to point out that webinars (not all though) are available in19 different languages.
Also make sure you check out the recorded webinars. Many users miss that and just look for the live webinars.
For other languages, content may also existing and a bit hidden. E.g. there is a "Getting started" video in German "Einstieg in das Arbeiten mit MATLAB" accessible from here: http://www.mathworks.de/products/matlab/index.html
I was up and running in a few days and could do most everything I wanted to in 3 months. I hope it doesn't take a year for you. Of course you do get better and better the longer you use it.
