MATLAB: Error in getDefaultUserFolder at MATLAB (2012b) startup

2012bgetdefaultuserfoldermatlab settingsuserpathwindows8

Hi,
I've recently installed MATLAB on my desktop runnings 64 bit windows 8. While I've successfully installed 2012b on my windows 7 computer, I ran into errors with windows 8.
On start-up, MATLAB displays the following errors:
Cannot find function, getDefaultUserFolder, in library services. Warning: MATLAB did not appear to successfully set the search path. To recover for this session of MATLAB, type "restoredefaultpath;matlabrc". To find out how to avoid this warning the next time you start MATLAB, type "docsearch problem path" after recovering for this session. Warning: Duplicate directory name: C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2012b\toolbox\local Warning: Initializing Handle Graphics failed in matlabrc. This indicates a potentially serious problem in your MATLAB setup, which should be resolved as soon as possible. Error detected was: MATLAB:undefinedVarOrClass Undefined variable "graphics" or class "graphics.internal.initializeMATLABRoot". Warning: Initializing Java preferences failed in matlabrc. This indicates a potentially serious problem in your MATLAB setup, which should be resolved as soon as possible. Error detected was: MATLAB:UndefinedFunction Undefined function 'usejava' for input arguments of type 'char'.
I found a similar post regarding this error (<http://www.mathworks.com.au/matlabcentral/answers/39976-error-in-getdefaultuserfolder-at-matlab-startup>) but the solution was unsuccessful for me. I tried to edit the matlab.settings file, but I was unable to save the changes.
Any help will be appreciated, apologies if I have left out key information regarding my machine/installation.

Do you have Lucid Logix's VirtuMVP installed on your machine? See this question: http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/50741
