MATLAB: Error in analoginput/getdata

I am receiving input from a USB microphone. A loop in my code repeatedly calls

lvl = SLM(AI, Fs, N);

in which there is a line

x = getdata(AI);

that is called.

Everything works fine for the first few iterations of the loop but then I get the following error and warning:

Error using daq.analoginput_winsound_1_127/getdata A timeout occurred during GETDATA.

Error in analoginput/getdata (line 196) varargout{1}=getdata(uddobj,samples,dataformat);

Error in SLM (line 37) x = getdata(AI);

Error event occurred at 12:33:21 for the object: winsound0-AI. A timeout occurred during GETDATA. Warning: Manual trigger with pretrigger before sufficient samples were acquired. Trigger time delayed by 1.#INF seconds.

I'm not sure what is going on here. I would greatly appreciate any help!

This bug has been fixed in Release 2007b (R2007b). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:

The problem is that multiple analoginput objects are created, and each analoginput object requires resources not only in the DAQ engine, but also in the Windows COM subsystem. Using DELETE(ai) in a loop will fix the problem. An even better solution is to create a single analoginput object and only perform the triggering and actual acquisition in a loop as the following code illustrates:

     ai = analoginput('nidaq', 'Dev1');
     addchannel(ai, 0);
     set(ai, 'TriggerType', 'manual');
     start(ai);
     for ii = 1:num_iterations
        trigger(ai)
        wait(ai, 10)
        data = getdata(ai);
        my_processing_routine(data);
     end
     delete(ai)
     clear ai

MATLAB documentation lists the following example to acquire data in the background by creating a session and adding a listener to access the acquired data using an anonymous function. For a continuous background generation, add a listener event to queue additional data to be output:

      s = daq.createSession('ni');
      s.addAnalogOutputChannel('cDAQ1Mod2', 0, 'Voltage');
      s.IsContinuous = true;
      s.Rate = 10000;
      data =  linspace(-1, 1, 5000)';
      lh = s.addlistener('DataRequired', ...
              @(src,event) src.queueOutputData(data));
      s.queueOutputData(data) 
      s.startBackground();

% perform other MATLAB operations during the generation.

The operation is continuous,

      s.stop();
      delete(lh);
