MATLAB: Editor / Command Window shift selection is laggy

Question

Fresh install of Matlab R2014b on a newly installed Ubuntu 16.04 system. If use shift + arrow key to select text in Editor / Command window, it is laggy. And even worse, if pressing the arrow key for a long time with shift key pressed, Matlab will freeze.

Does anyone know how to fix this? Same version of Matlab on Ubuntu 14.04 does not have this problem.

R2014b is not supported on Ubuntu 16.04 . The first version of MATLAB that supported Ubuntu 16.04 was R2016b .

Ubuntu 16.04 does not have some of the graphics extensions compiled in that MATLAB R2014b expects. It is a big pain to create a 16.04 system with the required graphics extensions.
