my question is related to edge detection using sobel operator. I am doing my project related to this subject on FPGA so i want to see that what will be the result in matlab can u tell me how to do edge detection using sobel oerator in matlab. Thank you

Use imgradient() to get the true Sobel filtered image. If you use edge() it doesn't give it to you but gives you a thresholded and skeletonized version of the Sobel filtered image instead.

I think they wanted you to use imfilter() or conv2() to do it "manually". If you do want to go to a higher level, you should use imgradent() not imgradientxy - that gives you the magnitude directly. Then you can threshold it by adding this line:

binaryImage = gMag > someThresholdValue; % Threshold the image.

You don't need to do both imgradientxy() and imgradient().

You need to have the outer loops scan over rows and columns, then extract a subimage and call median (if you're allowed to use that function).

windowHeight = 5;
windowWidth= 5;
[rows, columns, numberOfColorChannels] = size(grayImage);
for c = ceil(windowWidth/2) : columns - ceil(windowWidth/2)
  for r = ceil(windowHeight/2) : rows - ceil(windowHeight/2)
      subimage = grayImage(..............
  end
end
