MATLAB: Does the MATLAB 7.9 (R2009b) installer display the splash screen but fail to launch

When I run the R2009b installer, the splash screen is displayed for a short period of time, then it disappears and nothing happens. The setup.exe process is still running, but nothing comes up.

This bug has been fixed in Release 2010b (R2010b). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:

This issue can indicate a conflict with VPN software. As a workaround, close any currently running VPN software and run the installer again.

This behavior results when the Installer cannot locate product files for your MATLAB Student Version. Typically this occurs if the Installer is launched before relocating the other downloads into the "matlab_installer_maci" folder. To resolve this issue, see the solution below:

Each product that is downloaded (including the installer) is a separate .tar file. When downloading the student version, there are .tar files for the installer, MATLAB, and each of the toolboxes (e.g. matlab_installer_maci.tar, stu_matlab_maci.tar, stu_stats_maci.tar)

To resolve this issue, first extract (by double-clicking) the matlab_installer_maci.tar file. This will create a folder called "matlab_installer_maci". Next, relocate each of the product .tar files into the matlab_installer_maci folder.

Once the files have been relocated into the matlab_installer_maci folder, launch InstallForMacOSX.app. You should now be able to proceed with the installation.

As of MATLAB 7.7 (R2008b), the Symbolic Math Toolbox uses the MuPAD symbolic engine, which is the cause of the performance difference in this case. This issue is most apparent when using the INT function to calculate the definite integrals. Therefore, one potential workaround is to calculate the definite integral from the indefinite integral manually:

I2=int(y,x)
p1 = subs(I2, x, x0)
p2 = subs(I2, x, x3)
I3 = p2-p1
