MATLAB: Does SLDRT throw the error “Hardware timer cannot be allocated. Real-time kernel cannot run.”

I recently updated Windows 10 and Simulink Desktop Real-Time (SLDRT) no longer works. I see the error:

Hardware timer cannot be allocated. Real-time kernel cannot run.

How can I resolve this error?

You have to save your function myfun in separate file myfun.m

function [ f ] = myfun( x )
f = 3*x(1)^2 + 2*x(1)*x(2) + x(2)^2;    % Cost function
end

And then execute commands:

x0 = [1,1];
[x,fval] = fminunc(@myfun,x0)

Or simpler (in one line without additional file):

[x,fval] = fminunc(@(x)3*x(1)^2 + 2*x(1)*x(2) + x(2)^2,[1 1]);

This bug was fixed as of R2018a Update 4 and R2017b Update 8. Please refer to the External Bug Report below for more information:

Please note that after applying the MATLAB Update, it is necessary to re-install the updated real-time kernel to the operating system. This can be done by entering the below command into the MATLAB Prompt:

>> sldrtkernel -setup

As an immediate work-around, you may try to execute the following commands before starting the real-time simulation:

k = RT.Kernel;
k.DebugConfig(1) = 2;
reinitialize(k);
