Why does MLGetMatrix fail to work after I receive a Visual Basic Run-time error '424' with Excel Link 2.0 (R13)?

I am using Excel Link, and have a macro that calls MLGetMatrix. This works until I receive a Microsoft Visual Basic "Run-time error '424': Object required" dialog box from running some of my other code. As a result, MLGetMatrix fails to work for the remainder of my Excel session.

This bug has been fixed for Release 14 (R14). For previous releases, please read below for any possible workarounds:

This is a bug in Excel Link that our development staff is currently investigating.

As a workaround, please save your work in Excel, close all Excel windows, and restart Excel.

This bug has been fixed in Release 14 Service Pack 2 (R14SP2). For previous releases, please read below for any possible workarounds:

We have verified that there is a bug in Excel Link 2.2 (R14) in the way that it handles initialization. To work around this issue, try first invoking MATLAB as a COM automation server, and then invoking Excel. To invoke MATLAB as a COM automation server, open the Run dialog box by selecting Run from the Windows start menu. Then run the following command:

 matlab /Automation

A minimized instance of MATLAB should appear. If you invoke Excel, it should now connect to this instance of MATLAB.

Another way of solving the problem is shown below:

1) Create a shortcut for MATLAB on the desktop.

2) Right click on the shortcut and select "Properties".

3) Type " /automation" after "...\bin\win32\MATLAB.exe" in the box next to Target.

In that case, you do not have to type " matlab /automation" from the Windows start menu. Instead you may start MATLAB in the automation mode using the new shortcut.

Here is an example of a macro subroutine that uses MLGetMatrix:

 Sub Test1()
    MLGetMatrix "X", "Sheet1!A5"
    MatlabRequest
 End Sub

NOTE: The name of the sheet, Sheet1, is used here so that the location where the data is put is assured to be in the intended worksheet. Please make sure that the matrix that you want to import into Excel exists in the MATLAB Workspace before running the macro.

Here is an example of a macro subroutine that uses MLPutMatrix:

 Sub Test2()
    MLPutMatrix "A", Range("A1:C3")
 End Sub

NOTE: The Range function is needed here due to VBA for Excel requirement. Before running this example, please make sure that there are values in cell range A1:C3.
