MATLAB: Does MATLAB fail to launch on the Intel Mac machine

MATLAB

When I double click the MATLAB icon, the splash screen appears, however MATLAB never launches. When I attempt to launch MATLAB using -nodesktop, MATLAB launches, but when I type desktop I receive the error below:
??? Error: File:
/Applications/MATLAB74/toolbox/matlab/general/desktop.m Line: 18
Column: 8
Arguments to IMPORT must either end with ".*"
or else specify a fully qualified class name:
"com.mathworks.mde.desk.MLDesktop" fails this test.

This error occurs due to the fact that the version of Java on the system does not meet the Java Requirements that MATLAB was built with.
In order to launch MATLAB you must upgrade Java to the supported version. MATLAB R2006a, MATLAB R2006b, and MATLAB R2007a require Java Version 1.5.
