MATLAB: Does installing the Student Version of MATLAB for Linux fail with license expired messages on MATLAB R11 and earlier versions

I am unable to install my Student Version MATLAB for Linux because the installation says my license has expired. I look at my license file and notice that it says it expires on Jan-1-1999. There are also INCREMENT lines for products other than MATLAB.

This problem has been fixed as of MATLAB Student Version 6.0 (R12). If you are using an older version, please see the information below.
The reason you are getting this error is because the license file you are using is not the one shipped with the CD. If you look on page 2-9 of the MATLAB Student Version manual, step 5 states that you need to copy the license.dat file from your CD-ROM over to the root directory of MATLAB.
The license file you are trying to use is a generic version which was created by the installer because the real license file was never found in the root directory of MATLAB.
Therefore, you need to reinstall and be sure to follow the directions in Chapter 2 of the MATLAB Student Version manual, paying special attention to step 5.
