Whenever I close any open figures, MATLAB will bring the focus back to the xterm window instead of the MATLAB command window.

There is a bug in MATLAB 7.0.1 (R14SP1) in the way that MATLAB handles the focus of a window.

To work around this issue, minimize your xterm window to ensure that the command window will be the focus after closing your figures.

This behavior is a known issue on MATLAB 7.0 (R14) on MacOS. It occurs because of the use of the X11 windows manager, in conjunction with the fact that popup menus are in fact small X11 windows.

In order to make X11 set the focus to the window that was last active when the active window is closed, please type the following command in an X11 terminal :

defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_ffm -bool true

When you shut down and restart X11 (and MATLAB), the problem will be solved.

There is a bug in MATLAB 7.0.1 (R14SP1) on Macintosh platforms in the way the GINPUT function handles drawing the cursor on the figure.

As a workaround, adding a legend to the figure brings back the cursor (even if you later hide it). Therefore, modifying the code as follows resolves the issue:
