MATLAB: Does a nested report file differ in format when built MATLAB Report Generator 1.3 (R13SP1) and 2.3.1 (R14SP3)

When I build my report file in MATLAB Report Generator 1.3 (R13SP1), I obtain an RTF document that has chapters and sections. When I build the same report in MATLAB Report Generator 2.3.1 (R14SP3), The same headings appear in subsections and sub-subsections instead of chapters and sections.

This is expected behavior.

The issue is due to how MATLAB Report Generator 2.x creates chapters and subsections. If the report setup file does not explicitly define chapter components, then it assumes that the entire report is contained in a "Section 1". All of the sections nested in "Section 1" become sub-sections, which explains the difference in text and paragraph formatting.

To work around this issue, perform the following steps:

1. Open test_format_stub.rft in MATLAB Report Generator 2.3.1 (R14SP3).
2. Right-Click on "Report - test_format_stub.rpt" and select Send to Workspace.
3. Enter the following in the MATLAB Command Window:
      ans.SectionType = 'book'

4. In order to preserve this change, save the file. Note that this format is not recognized by the older MATLAB Report Generator 1.3 (R13SP1), you should use file menu option 'Save As...' to create a new file name.

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 14 Service Pack 3 (R14SP3) for PDF Reports. In PDF reports, two cell groups are available for this purpose, Header Content and Footer Content. You can use templates to specify XML code that defines the content for a header or a footer.

Follow the steps below to create a custom stylesheet for PDF with custom header and footer contents:

1) Open the report setup file in Report Explorer

2) From the menu bar, click Tools > Edit Stylesheet.

3) Find the -Formatting Objects (PDF)—in the middle window and double click on ‘Custom Header’

4) Change the display name in the properties pane on the right to ‘My Custom Header’ (or any desired name)

5) In the left window, go to the ‘Header content’ and ‘Footer content’ tabs and replace the default values with custom content.

6) Save the stylesheet (as a ‘.rgs’ file) on the MATLAB path

7) Select the report setup file in the left window,

    In the selection lists under the ‘Report Format and Stylesheet’ area of the     Properties pane on the right:
       Specify Acrobat (PDF) for File format
       Specify My Custom Header for stylesheet.

8) Save the report setup file and generate report.

For product releases prior to Release 14 Service Pack 3 (R14SP3), there are no workarounds.

MATLAB: Are the figures missing from Rich Text Format (RTF) files generated with MATLAB Report Generator when I open the files in Microsoft Word 2003

RTF files generated by MATLAB Report Generator include figures as externally linked files using field codes. Microsoft Word does not update the field codes automatically when an RTF document is opened. The figures should be visible in the document when you launch Microsoft Word from the Report Viewer. However, when you open RTF files from within Microsoft Word or from Windows, the figures are not visible.

There are several options to make the figures visible.

1. After the file is open in Microsoft Word, select all text by pressing CTRL+A. Then, update the fields by pressing F9.

2. Open the file by typing the following command at the MATLAB Command Prompt:

docview('%<FileName>','UpdateFields');

Replace %<FileName> with the name of your file, which should be located in the current directory.

Once the images are visible, after using either of these methods, you can use the Save As command from the File menu in Microsoft Word to save the RTF document with a different name. Microsoft Word embeds the images in the document, and they are visible every time you open the new file. However, the resulting file is much larger than the separate RTF and image files created by MATLAB.

3. A final option is to create the report in Word document form. Beginning with version 2.3 (R14SP2+), MATLAB Report Generator creates reports in Microsoft Word document format.

Note: If the figures are not visible when you launch Microsoft Word from the Report Viewer, this is probably due to a bug that was fixed in version 2.2.1 (R14SP2). If you are using a previous version, read the following:

In MATLAB Report Generator 2.1.1 (R14SP1), you can work around this issue by modifying the Report Generator preferences in MATLAB. Here are the steps:

1. Open the Preferences dialog box by clicking Preferences on the MATLAB File menu.

2. Click Report Generator in the left pane of the Preferences dialog box.

3. Under Output Format Options, change the Format ID to Rich Text Format.

4. Under Output Format Options, change the View command from

 docview(%'<FileName>','-UpdateFields');

 docview('%<FileName>','UpdateFields');

5. Click OK to save the changes you made and close the Preferences dialog box.
