MATLAB: Do I receive an error referencing libactivation.jnilib when MATLAB fails to start on the Mac

I am trying to start an older release of MATLAB on my Mac. It fails to start, and shows me the following error:
There was an unexpected exception:
Can't load library:
/Applications/MATLAB_RXXXXX.app//bin/maci64/libactivation.jnilib

This error indicates that the activation client software has failed to start. This typically means that MATLAB has not yet been activated on your system, and does not have a license file. The activation client software is attempting to start in order to help you activate, but is unable to start correctly.
The MATLAB activation client may not be able to open successfully if you have updated your Mac OS X version past the supported versions for the version of MATLAB that you are running.
To work around this problem, you will need to activate manually. This process will have you activate the system through your MathWorks account at MathWorks.com, and you will download a license file that you can manually put in the licenses folder for MATLAB on your system.
