MATLAB: Do I receive an error referencing libactivation.jnilib when MATLAB fails to start on the Mac

I am trying to start an older release of MATLAB on my Mac. It fails to start, and shows me the following error:

There was an unexpected exception:

Can't load library:

/Applications/MATLAB_RXXXXX.app//bin/maci64/libactivation.jnilib

This error indicates that the activation client software has failed to start. This typically means that MATLAB has not yet been activated on your system, and does not have a license file. The activation client software is attempting to start in order to help you activate, but is unable to start correctly.

The MATLAB activation client may not be able to open successfully if you have updated your Mac OS X version past the supported versions for the version of MATLAB that you are running.

To work around this problem, you will need to activate manually. This process will have you activate the system through your MathWorks account at MathWorks.com, and you will download a license file that you can manually put in the licenses folder for MATLAB on your system. There are a few reasons why this error can occur:

1) The DAEMON line in your license.dat file is incorrect or missing.

For license server, the DAEMON line should read:

Windows

---------

 DAEMON MLM $MATLAB\etc\win{32|64}\mlm.exe ($MATLAB\flexlm\mlm.exe for releases prior to R2010b on Windows)

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

Linux/Mac

------------------

 DAEMON MLM $MATLAB/etc/glnx{86|a64}/MLM

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

(NOTE: prior to R2011a, the DAEMON line on Linux/Mac was "DAEMON MLM $MATLAB/etc/glnx{86|a64}/lm_matlab")

NOTE: Once you have made changes to your license file, be sure to restart the network license manager for these changes to take effect. For more information on how to restart the license manager, see the Related Solution listed below.

2) The SERVER line in the license.dat file on a client does not match the license.dat file on the server.

If you are running MATLAB using a concurrent license and you are on a client machine, make sure the SERVER line in your license.dat file matches that of the license.dat file on your license server.

The license file on the client machine varies depending upon operating system and version. For R2008a and above, the license file is generally called network.lic and is located in $MATLAB\licenses (where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory). For versions prior to R2008a, the license file will generally be the following:

Windows

 $MATLAB\bin\win32 (for 32-bit MATLAB)
 $MATLAB\bin\win64 (for 64-bit MATLAB)

Linux/Unix/Mac

 $MATLAB/etc

(where $MATLAB is the MATLAB installation directory)

 $MATLABROOT/etc ($MATLAB\flexlm for releases prior to R2010b on Windows)

3) The TCP port number used to communicate with the license server is already being used by another application.

MATLAB: Do I receive License Manager Error -13

"License Manager Error -13" indicates that the SERVER and/or DAEMON lines are missing from the license file.

The SERVER and DAEMON lines are added to the "license.dat" file when the network license manager is installed.

These lines should appear just before the INCREMENT lines in your license.dat file.

NOTE: If you are installing the network license manager for PolySpace products, you will have to manually encode these lines.

To add these lines manually, see the following example SERVER and DAEMON lines.

SERVER {hostname} {HostID} 27000
DAEMON MLM {$MATLAB}/etc/MLM

$HOSTNAME is the hostname of the license server

{HostID} is the HostID of the license server {$MATLAB} is the root MATLAB directory on your license server

Windows

$MATLAB\bin\win32\license.dat (for 32-bit MATLAB)
$MATLAB\bin\win64\license.dat (for 64-bit MATLAB)

Linux/Unix/Mac

$MATLAB/etc/license.dat
