MATLAB: Do I get the error : Error using sendmail (line 172) 530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTL command first

I am using the sendmail command with gmail to send email , after updating my authentication details recently the sendmail command stopped working.

It happens mainly when I have attachments in my email.

This happens when sendmail tries to create a secure connection and send the email. By default the connection is plain text and the server expects the a secure connect. To make it a secure connection please add the following line to configure the sendmail command

props = java.lang.System.getProperties;
props.setProperty( 'mail.smtp.starttls.enable', 'true' );

This property sets the connection to be secure.

To send email using SENDMAIL via the GMail/Yahoo server, you can execute the following in the MATLAB Prompt:

In R2013a, the following command might also resolve the issue:

props.setProperty('mail.smtp.starttls.enable','true');

Note that the above commands are undocumented and may change in future MATLAB releases. Also, note that SENDMAIL does not support servers that require username and password authentications in MATLAB 7.1 (R14SP3) and before and hence the above commands will not work with those releases.

In order to enable STARTTLS via port 587, use the following configuration example:

mail = 'your_email_address@example.com; % Replace with your email address

password = 'your_password'; % Replace with your email password

server = 'smtp.example.com'; % Replace with your SMTP server

% Apply prefs and props

props = java.lang.System.getProperties;

props.setProperty('mail.smtp.port', '587');

props.setProperty('mail.smtp.auth','true');

props.setProperty('mail.smtp.starttls.enable','true');

setpref('Internet','E_mail', mail);

setpref('Internet','SMTP_Server', server);

setpref('Internet','SMTP_Username', mail);

% Send the email
