The MATLAB installer has finished, but instead of activation, I get an error message similar to:

When installing the Network License Manager on a Linux machine using the R2020a MathWorks Installer, the sys folder is not provided in the installation. If the Linux distribution does not have the required libraries, the License Manager will not start.
As a workaround, you may either perform a manual installation of the Network License Manager or obtain the sys folder from the License Manager binaries.

I don't know where you came across the
shapereadfunction, but a very quick search shows that it requires the Mapping toolbox so if you don't have this toolbox installed or licensed then you don't have access to it.
Even just typing
shaperead
on command line in recent versions of Matlab tells you:
though I don't think old versions of Matlab used to do this (almost certainly, I think, not back in 2013 when this question was originally asked)
