MATLAB: Am I unable to specify the word size or work with integer arithmetic in the Filter Design Toolbox

I am using the Filter Design and Fixed-Point Toolboxes in a simulation of IIR and FIR filters which are implemented with integer representation. I have not been able to assign variables desired word sizes and I have not been able to get integer results as desired.

I would like to see a prearranged configuration in which all the arithmetic is performed with integers and all the user has to specify is word sizes for inputs and results.

This enhancement has been incorporated in Release 14 Service Pack 3 (R14SP3). For previous product releases, read below for any possible workarounds:

The ability to specify the word size or work with integer arithmetic is not available in the Filter Design Toolbox.

There are no workarounds.

Increase the vpa digits much beyond what you need and do the calculations. floor() the result, abs() it, add 1, and take ceil() of the log10 of that. The result of ceil() will be the number of digits that were used before the decimal point. With that number in hand, you can vpa() the result of the calculation, this time specifying 10 + the number of digits before the decimal point as your precision. The result will be a symbolic number.

OR....

Do the calculation with more digits than you need. char() the result of the vpa. locate the '.' in the string and discard everything after the 10th character after the decimal place. The result will be a character string.

fsolve(YourFunction, YourStartingPoint, optimset('TolFun', 1e-10, 'TolX', 1e-10))

You might also need to use 'MaxIter', 1000

If you need more than 16 digits of precision (taking into account round-off error) then you will need to use a different solution method entirely, such as using the Symbolic Toolkit.
