MATLAB: Algorithm for MajorAxis Length

i m using Major Axis length command associated with the regionprops command. i m using it on a binary image after using BW=bwlabel(img,8) on the binary image. Further using s=regionprops(BW,'majoraxislength', 'minoraxislength','centroid'). i would want to know the Algorithm behind these parameter calculations using regionprops.

The lengths itself are not perpendicular to anything, because they are scalars. The replied lengths are:

 'MajorAxisLength' Length (in pixels) of the major axis of the ellipse that has the same
 normalized second central moments as the region
 (equivalent for "Minor")

The major and minor axes of an ellipse (not their lengths) are perpendicular by definition.

Use bwlabel() and ismember

[labeledImage, numRegions] = bwlabel(binaryImage);
props = regionprops(labeledImage, 'Area')
% Compute all the areas.
allAreas = [props.Area]

    thisRegion = ismember(labeledImage, k);
    figure;
    imshow(thisRegion);
    drawnow;
