Another way is to use some creative rewriting:
$$x^4 + 1 = (x^2 + 1)^2 - 2x^2 = (x^2 + 1 - x\sqrt 2)(x^2 + 1 + x\sqrt2).$$
Then just solve the two quadratic equations.
