[GIS] Why is the OSM map itself is not visible in the qgis window

I'm new in working with QGIS.

I have tried to download an OSM map of Rome and its surroundings into my QGIS. As far as I am concerned, I have followed each step which I could find on various websites. In fact I do see the three layers of my OSM map in the side bar (points, polylines and polygons). However, I do not see the map itself.

Does anyone have an idea what my mistake might be?

In the meantime, I tried another way. I have downloaded the "Isle of Man"-Shapefile from Geofabrik. I was able to import all vectors for all data that are meant to appear in the map. In the end I saw the outline of the Isle of Man, the houses, the rivers etc. However, I do not see the map itself.

I have a new laptop, 64-bit, Windows 8, QGIS 2.4

If you want to see the same map as on http://www.openstreetmap.org, install the Openlayers plugin and select OSM as a background layer from there.

If you download the raw data, you have to style that data yourself. This is not an easy task.

In many cases, the background map is the easiest solution.

If you want to have the same look as the background tiles, you have to use the same toolchain.

That requires to have a Postgis database filled with osm2pgsql.

The Openstreetmap plugin of QGIS has some limitations in the correct creation of multipolygons (although much better than the old plugin had some yers ago), and the ogr2ogr data provider used by "Add vector layer" has too.

The shapefiles from geofabrik are only a subset of the OSM database, with attention to roads. It might be that some kind of strange forest multipolygons are dropped there.

There is no other way for calculating the number of features from the osm.pbf file than to parse all the data from the file. Therefore in your case 2) QGIS saves your time and shows the number of features as zero. That's intentional. Just select the desired layer, add it in to your map, and you will see the data.

QGIS open that large .pbf file rather slow. I would read first what the driver manual page http://www.gdal.org/drv_osm.html says about osmconf.ini and then convert the .pbf file into SpatiaLite database with ogr2ogr. The basic command is

ogr2ogr -f sqlite -dsco spatialite=yes czech-republic.sqlite czech-republic-latest.osm.pbf
