[GIS] Why can’t I share project files with another QGIS user

I am working with another QGIS user at a separate location and we want to share the projects that I have already created using QGIS. However, the other user is unable to open the project files in QGIS. This problem has occurred when sharing via USB stick or via files shared in Dropbox.

Could there be an issue with the fact that I installed the standalone version of 1.8.0 whilst my colleague installed the OSGeo4W version?

If the other user can't load some or all layers, you should switch file paths to relative under Settings -> Project settings, General tab, and move all loadable files into the same folder as the project file before adding them to the project.

Loading of WMS services or database connections might still be another issue.

[GIS] Downgrade to long term release QGIS with OSGeo4W

Using advanced install of the OSGEO4W installer, you can choose the package qgis-ltr. This will bring you the long term release qgis 2.8.x.

QGIS 2.10.1 and ltr can be installed together (same as QGIS and qgis-dev can). Double-clicking on a project file will open it with only one of them. You can change the version with doubleclicking on C:\OSGeo4W\apps\qgis\bin\qgis.reg or C:\OSGeo4W\apps\qgis-ltr\bin\qgis.reg.

BTW, I would suggest to use the standalone installer for larger companies, saving download time down to one single download. Standalone versions go always into different folders, hence can live happily together on your hard disk.

A little more research (google for 'qgis python access gps') brougth the solution, once more as simple as obvious, and with no additional python modules to be installed.

My spanish is not the best (if any), but i understand the code mentioned which works fine:

connectionRegistry = QgsGPSConnectionRegistry().instance()
connectionList = connectionRegistry.connectionList()
GPSInfo = connectionList[0].currentGPSInformation()
lon = GPSInfo.longitude
lat = GPSInfo.latitude
