I am creating art prints using spatial data.
I use ESRI software every day for my regular job, therefore I am proficient in GIS. However, I can't afford ESRI software for my art projects at home.
Currently I am using QGIS. What are some recommended products for producing print-quality maps?
James Fee had a post about some resources to make historical map effects using ArcGIS. A zip file of all the materials including icon and font sets are available.
With this tutorial (unfortunately only in German) I managed to make some 3D-maps from Openstreetmap data and SRTM height data using Povray:

You should give Mapnik with TileMill or Mapbox Studio a try.
