What does an asterisk (*) mean when shown beside a field name in the attribute table?
I would think those are reserved field names but they are not.

Although your question has already been answered in the comments. Why don't just add a new field to the attribute-table with the same name and select $id (or $rownum) as input in the field-calculator?

Thanks for sending that to Safe Software support James. This helped us see the issue which was a field name 'Order" which is a reserved word for file geodatabase. FME generally will catch these and I have followed up with problem report. The solution is to change that field name in the destination feature type in FME Workbench.

It means that the field is indexed. You can change the character used to indicate whether a field is indexed under the Table Options > Appearance menu:
