I am using trying to use an iterator to run through and folder of shapefiles and add them as input to the merge tool in ArcMap ModelBuilder. Something seems amiss; when I connect the iterate output file to the merge tool in ModelBuilder, it doesn't seem to take.
What am I doing wrong here?
Assuming that your text files are some sort of tables (e.g. CSV having X and Y coordinates in rows with delimited columns), try using 'Iterate Tables' instead of 'Iterate Files'. You will be offered an option of choosing DBF or INFO as the type. Ignore this field. It is optional. You should now be able to connect the output file to the 'Make XY Event Layer' tool.
You have included a heap of Python code in this post. Remember that the 'Export to Python Script' option in Model Builder will not include the iterator. If you want a Python script, then you will have to write this yourself.
If you try to output the iterate raster tool directly into raster calculator, you will only see the last iteration in the raster calculator layers and variables list. To get around this nuisance in model builder, use Collect Values to generate a list that you can pass off to Cell Statistics to do your calculations. Simply choose the "MEAN" overlay statistic and you will have your average grid calculations. You can always bring this average grid up in raster calculator if you need to make further calculations.

First setup Iterate Feature Classes to loop through all your feature classes in a workspace, this will feed them one at a time into your next process, but if you put Collect Values as the next step in your process it will 'clump' all the individual feature classes into a cohesive input for Merge..
This workflow produced a merged feature class from all the feature classes in the workspace Area11_14.
