I am trying to make a map using US census data showing vacant housing to total housing on the same map.
I came across the "multiple attributes" feature under the symbology tab and wondered if this is the way to go and, if so, how to use it?
I have only been able to get one type of symbol, the gradient feature to appear.
I'm using ArcGIS Desktop 10.
As to my knowledge, unfortunately, there isn't a way to update a layer in the TOC that has "OTHER" symbology type directly. If your symbologyType = "OTHER", as you have noticed, it means that you are not able to alter symbology properties for those symbology classes that are supported in 10.2. This is because only a limited number of symbology classes and properties are exposed to arcpy.mapping module right now. From the Esri Help:
If a value of OTHER is returned, then the layer's symbology can't be modified.
The only way to change this symbology type by using arcpy is to update layer first (UpdateLayer). It was like this since 10.0 and nothing has changed in 10.1/10.2 regarding the situation when you have "OTHER" symbology type.

After you've done updating the layer from Single symbol (as you have now) with some dummy .lyr file that would change it to, say, Graduated colors, you should be able to start changing individual properties of the symbology (see the sample four in Layer).

Slight modification in loki's Answer; in Layer Properties, Symbology tab settings, under Representations, chose the Representation you wanna modify, and edit the lable as you want. If want to change the Polygon as line, add line instead of polygon representation, or by deleting any unwanted representation...

The multiple attributes feature under symbology is indeed the way to go. If you select the two categories that you want to use to colour and scale your symbols in the value fields section and then select
Add All Valuesto create a list of all the unique combinations of value pairs. To apply the scaling by colour and symbol size click on theColor RampandSymbol Sizebuttons and select one of your two fields in each box.You can also manually style individual value pairs by double clicking on the symbol beside the value pair and selecting your preferred style.
