[GIS] Stopping values from rounding to whole numbers in ArcGIS attribute tables

I am trying to edit an attribute table in ArcGIS 10.1 and so far have been unable to keep it from rounding to whole numbers. Even when I manage to "pad with zeroes" using the numeric settings, it will round to 6.0. I have tried the Editor > Options > General method as well. My decimal places are currently set to round to 6, but any data I enter rounds to a whole number. My field is set to "Long Integer".

What obvious solution am I missing?

'Long integer' won't produce decimals. Try floating point. For reference, this wiki link lists types of numbers.

A non-programmable way to do this would be to sort your table as you have done, and then just go directly to the nth record that you want (by manually typing the value at the bottom of the attribute table). Once you get the field value for the nth value, just do step 4 in dklassen's first post.

This assumes the km column stores numbers, not strings.

Open the table.

Add a new column and name it whatever you want, I'll use wholenum in this example.

Right-click the wholenum column and choose Field Calculator.

Set the Parser to Python and put a check in Show Codeblock.

Enter this formula in the Pre-Logic Script Code field:

x = 0 
if [km] MOD 1 = 0 then
x = 1
endif

Put x in the km= field.

Click OK to close the Field Calculator.

Set this Definition Query on the layer: wholenum = 1.

Now it will only display points with whole number values. You could take similar steps to show every 5 km or 10 km point, by using MOD 5 and MOD 10 respectively, to show fewer points at even smaller scales.
