[GIS] Saving selection as new shapefile using QGIS gives OGR error

I have an issue saving a set of polygons as a new layer that I've selected using the polygon select tool in QGIS.

After selecting the polygons in the main (source) layer, I've tried two ways:

I tried Edit> copy features > paste features as new vector layer. After which I get the dialog box below. A also tried paste features as new memory vector layer – which created a layer, but there were no attributes in the table – is was empty

I tried another way of right clicking the selected layer > save as > save as > and clicked the 'save selection only' in the 'save vector layer as…' dialog box. I got the same dialog box.

Any ideas welcome.

Another method which I don't think you mentioned is to first create a new polygon shapefile:

Layer > New > New Shapefile Layer...

Then select Polygon in the options and click OK. Toggle the Edit button for both the new layer and the layer you want to copy the polygons from.

Copy your polygons and paste them into the new shapefile. If there are no errors then the polygons along with their associated attributes should be copied.

For QGIS 2.x versions

You are doing fine, but just need to go to next step.

Tick on Save only selected features.

QGIS – How to Select Features Intersecting Another Layer’s Selection

VirtualLayers possibly to the first world problem rescue; this is a nice solution if you can express your polygon selection with some condition (I use an id <some_id> as an example here):

Layer -> Add Layer -> Add/Edit Virtual Layer...
Import -> both your WFS layers when loaded
(you can try adding the service directly via Add -> select WFS as provider and paste in the URL, but it keeps on throwing errors for me on QGIS 2.18)

and then type

SELECT pts.*
FROM <point_layer> AS pts,
     <polygon_layer> AS plg
WHERE plg.<id_column> = <some_id>
  AND ST_Intersects(pts.geometry, plg.geometry);

into the Query field.

If you want to manually select features:

Edit -> Copy Features
Edit -> Past Features As -> Temporary Scratch Layer...

and continue with your usual workflow from there
(you could of course use that layer in the above query to get the intersecting points into a virtual layer; just omit plg.<id_column> = <some_id> AND in above query and replace <polygon_layer> with the name of the scratch layer).
