[GIS] Radar data – animated gif in GeoServer

I have 7 animated gifs (5 animations in each gif) with bounding coordinates of real time radar data. The number of these will grow significantly over the next year or so.

We are currently serving each gif as a separate raster layer using OpenLayers but this is causing problems on slower connections as OpenLayers appears to load the gifs even if not being displayed in the viewport.

I would like to be able to combine and serve all the animations via GeoServer as one layer, probably animated using the GeoServer Animation feature.

This is totally rocket science to me so I am reaching out for suggestions from more experienced users.

I guess we have to break the gifs apart for each animation, combine them into one raster for each time slice (they are all synced), load each georeferenced raster into PostgreSQL then use GeoServer's animation feature to display the layer.

Am open to any and all suggestions.

Sort of. Break the gifs into one tiff for each step of the animation (eventually internally compressed), bake the time of the frame into the name, and then build a mosaic with time dimension enabled (http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/tutorials/imagemosaic_timeseries/imagemosaic_timeseries.html)

Try a sliding window of sorts. You can buffer 10 layers at a time. Start destroying layers and removing them from the DOM and memory once you reach 10 layers. So once you hit layer 10, layer 0-9 are destroyed and layers 20-30 are loaded with visibility to false. This will give you a buffer of about 10 layers but you can modify your tolerance as you see fit for performance. If you feel 20 layers works better, go with 20.

To expand on my earlier comment for the benefit of Janne and other readers.

When you use OpenLayers to make a WFS (and WFS-T) request you need to be aware of the same-origin policy, this is a clever way to prevent unscrupulous web sites from running malicious javascript exploits on your web browser. Basically what it says is that if a javascript app wants to talk to the network it can only talk to the machine and port combination that it was served from.

This means that if you load a page from http:// localhost:8080 then that is the only place that your script can send requests to. Alternatively if you load your page from file://mytomcat/webapps/mypage.html your script can only send requests to file://mytomcat/... which isn't actually a server so it won't work.
