[GIS] QGIS slow on loading project

Is there any work around to mitigate the amount of time QGIS takes when loading projects that have large tables from postgis layers .
I have tried to turn off this large layers so they are not in use , save , close project and then reopen project hoping that the turned off layers would not load on project start again. But nothing it seems that it will always load the tables in memory even though they are turned off.
Any suggestion ???

In the Postgis connection settings, selecting the "Don't resolve type of unrestricted columns (GEOMETRY)" checkbox usually helps.

This situation is further complicated by the fact that the default TIGER scripts for Postgis don't lend themselves to parallelizability - they drop and create the tiger_staging schema, which makes it impossible to load states in parallel.

I've seen people having problems with loading data into RDS with osm2pgsql caused by latency. I've wanted to experiment with RDS, but I haven't had the time or a project that needed.

I would try, instead of using PostGIS loading scripts, using ogr2ogr. You could then try it single-threaded, and running multiple processes in parallel. This should tell you how it scales to multiple threads accessing RDS.

Do not use the OpenLayers Plugin, it sucks. Use QuickMapServices instead. (see my comment below on why I think it sucks)

Or you can add the google tileserver directly as a raster layer.
