[GIS] Problems installing QGIS on Windows Vista

I have tried several times on several windows vista machines to install QGIS (both versions 2.10.1 and 2.8) but with no luck.
It seems to install fine without any errors but when the installation is finished QGIS is nowhere to be found. There is no short cut created on the desktop and it does not appear when I search in the start menu.

I have very basic computer knowledge and have simply followed the onscreen instructions and not altered anything else.

It works perfectly on my windows 7 and 8 machines.

There are a couple of different ways to install QGIS, and you don't mention where you are getting it. Assuming you are using the QGIS standalone installer, I highly recommend that you switch to the OSGeo4W installer. I have run it successfully on WinXP, Vista, and 7.

Just do the Express Desktop Install, and if you don't want the other GIS software included by default (uDig and a handful of others), uncheck everything except QGIS.

Your PYTHONPATH environment variable must be specified. QGIS Server 2.8 deals with Python extension and you must provide it a good environment.

From my experience, there are 2 possibilities:

Have you tried to format your computer?
Have your tried to disable your anti-virus for the installation?

In the company I work, 4 computers installed it with no problems, but other 2 had exactly the same issues you described (running on 64-bit Windows 7).

We had to format these 2 computers, and after that the installation had no problems.

If you are in a network (like I am, at work), try installing with "Run as administrator" or calling the network manager to give your computer full permission to install softwares.

We didn't understand the problem though, maybe some messed up Microsoft's .NET Framework package.

Another thing we noticed, before we formatted the computers, the installation was too fast (it finished, but too fast), so I think something was blocking part of the installation without the installer noticing it (resulting in missing files like the qgis_core.dll).
