I'd like to symbolize polygons with a point at the centroid. Does anyone have suggestions how to accomplish this without creating a new shapefile?
I'm using ArcGIS 10.0.

For ArcGIS I would suggest using a python script for this. The general code flow would go something like:
- Make feature layer of point layer
- Create count field for polygon layer
- Define update cursor on polygon layer
- Loop through each feature and use select layer by location method
- Use get count method to get the number of selected point features
- Write count value from step 5 to polygon count field to current polygon feature using update cursor
This will allow you to count points that may intersect many different polygon features per polygon.
Open the layer properties for your route.
Go to the label tab.
Click on 'Symbol'.
Scroll down through all the available styles until you reach the following:
Select any of the symbols with the number inside the polygon and edit them to suit your needs by selecting the symbol and clicking 'Edit Symbol...'

You can use the symbology option 'multiple attributes' and set the size min/max for the symbol to the same, and it will create a dot in the middle of each polygon. also, you could probably do the same with maplex labeling to place a '.' label at the centroid of each shape
