I created an image in QGIS using the Google Maps layer and I would now like to publish this as part of an academic journal article. However, the journal editor has asked if I have permission to use the Google Maps base layer. Does anyone know if I need to obtain permission from Google to use this image?

I saw this answer on the Openlayers mailing list a few days ago. You need to make sure you are providing a version, such as v=3.6:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?sensor=false&v=3.6"></script>
Then it should disappear.

I just saw that this problem has returned on the OpenLayers mailing list. A suggested fix (which worked for me) is to paste the following into the openlayers style.css
.olLayerGooglePoweredBy.olLayerGoogleV3.gmnoprint {
visibility:hidden;
}
You can use 'LatLng Marker' Google Map in Map Labs mode to find the Coordinates for your image.
Bottom Left is first, Top right is the second coordinate.

Google has a permissions tool here. When you click through the options, it seems like your use of the map (academic, in print-media) would probably fall under fair-use so long as you do not obscure the copyright.
Is it possible to make the same image using OpenStreetMap?
