[GIS] OSM Place Search in QGIS not working anymore

We've used OSM Place Search plugin daily with QGIS 2.2, 2.6 and 2.8 and it's been great.

However, it stopped working last week for myself and several other inter-office users. We enter search text, hit the arrow button and nothing happens. No error, no spinning wheel, nothing.

Here's the syntax from the qgis extensions log:

2015-09-22T16:27:30 1 http://open.mapquestapi.com/nominatim/v1/search.php?format=json&q=maywood%20park&addressdetails=0&polygon_text=1

2015-09-22T16:27:30 1 expected string or buffer

Anyone else experiencing this or any ideas how to fix?

It says: The AppKey submitted with this request is invalid.

MapQuest changed their licensing model. Since Sep 15th, 2015, they require a valid API Key for their services. For more information read the related blog entry.

If the plugin doesn't offer a method for entering your own AppKey (or a custom Nominatim URL) then you will have to wait for the plugin to get updated.

There turn out to be two methods (more?) to see the list of available 'panels' in QGIS. One is through the main menu: View | Panels The other is to 'right click' on a toolbar. The check box for OSM Place Search is available using the second method, but not the first.

NB: This is also the case for at least one other panel I can see (undo/redo).

As already pointed out in the comments, the problem is that you are directly opening the HTML file in your browser. This will show up like file:///C:/map.html in your address bar.

The OSMGeocoder plugin is calling the URL location.protocol+//nominatim.openstreetmap.org/search (see source code). This works on webservers because the location.protocol is either http: or https: and will result in a valid URL, but in your case the protocol is file:. The Geocoder tries to access file:///nominatim.openstreetmap.org/search which is a folder or file on your computer, but that does not exist.

As a workaround you can replace protocol in the file Control.OSMGeocoder.js with https::

Another way is to install a webserver on your computer, which make files accessible via http://localhost/. If you have Python installed you can run python -m SimpleHTTPServer in a command line window or terminal in the folder where your map html file is. Other well-known webservers are Apache or nginx.
