Import Shapefiles – Opening and Extracting Data from Shapefiles

We are in need of US highway data.

We found it for Florida at the state GIS website.

We downloaded the data for Florida highway intersections from here (this is a zip file).

How do we use these files and extract the geocode values of the intersections (exits) from them?

You will have to tell QGIS how to label the features. The layer attribute table (do a right-click in the layer list, select attribute table) will show the attributes for the features. If you have a "name" attribute or such, you'll need to use the "label" tab of the layer properties (double-click a layer name in the layer list, or right-click and choose properties at the bottom; the label tab is the third from the top).

Your command is basically OK but the error message looks worse than it actually is. The important message is

It may be corrupt or read-only file accessed in update mode.

You can open files from zip but you can't update them. If you read the zip as read-only you can get rid of the error messages.

It is possible to convert all the layers into any format that supports multiple layers with a one-line command. As an example a conversion into GeoPackage:

ogr2ogr -f gpkg test.gpkg /vsizip/bndt_105a_shp_en.zip

Adding more data to existing layers and adding new layers into existing GeoPackage should go this way:

ogr2ogr -f gpkg -update -append test.gpkg /vsizip/another.zip
