From other posts I worked out how to activate the "move label" icon and was successfully able to move a number of labels into the positions I wanted. However when I untoggle the "edit" function for the vector file concerned the labels that I have just moved all disappear – leaving me with only the unmoved labels.
I cannot find anyway to bring them back. How do I stop the moved labels from disappearing?
With ArcGIS Maplex Label Engine
Switch on the View Unplaced Labels but clicking the icon on
the toolbar.

Forcing all labels to display this is the last resort Check the Never remove (place overlapping) check box.
Click the Label Manager button Label Manager on the Labeling toolbar.
Check the check box next to the layer you want to label.
Choose a label class under the layer.
Click the Properties button.
Click the Conflict Resolution tab.
Check the Never remove (place overlapping) check box.
(There should be no difference in the Maplex Labeling Engine in 9.2 and 10.1)
From your screenshot I suspect that you are setting the data defined x and y to the expressions "x" and "y", rather then directly binding them to the field itself.
Make sure you use the "attribute field" submenu in the data defined popup menu and select your x and y fields from that menu, rather then using expressions.

The coordinates of moved labels are stored in the attribute table. It could be that the coordinates are truncated when they are permanently saved. Check before and after toggling "edit" to see if this is the cause.
